Naselle senior Jack Strange scored four touchdowns rushing and two more receiving while helping the Comets’ defense hold off Pomeroy in a 60-50 win in the 1B state football quarterfinals on Saturday at South Bend High School.
The Comets are back in the state semifinals for the first time since 2021 after having defeated the Pirates in the playoffs for the third time in four years.
But the contest was certainly Naselle’s biggest test so far in an undefeated season.
“We played a good football team and we had our first interceptions of the season, we had two of them,” Naselle coach Kevin McNulty noted. “Those are because of the quality of opponent and also playoff situation, kids got a little tight a couple times there.”
The game was a rematch from the 2023 state football playoffs, when the Comets defeated the Pirates 78-58 in Pomeroy. But unlike that shootout 12 months ago, Naselle was never able to pull away and exhale until the final horn sounded.
“We had some opportunities to expand our lead and didn’t with the turnovers,” McNulty said. “With all things being considered, playing through the turnovers and still coming out with a victory like that, that’s a tough feat.”
McNulty said the games against Pomeroy have become a true rivalry, but not one he particularly enjoys.
