WOODLAND — Perhaps just a couple more free throws would have done it. Or maybe one more three falling through. Could have been one fewer turnover down the stretch, or one more steal.
If any of these things had gone Woodland’s way, Tuesday, the Beavers would likely been celebrating a win at home over 2A Greater St. Helens League frontrunner Columbia River.
Alas, none of those did, and the Rapids held on for a 42-41 road win in a clash of top-15 ranked teams who both entered the contest at The Den unscathed in league play.
“It was a hard-fought game. You hope to come out on top because you expend a lot of energy,” Woodland head coach Glen Flanagan said. “We have the team to do it, we just have to take care of the ball and we kind of panicked a little bit. Felt like we should’ve had it. If we make our free throws, we win it.”
The loss overshadowed another standout performance from double-double-guarantee sophomore post, Kennedy Bockert, who finished with 24 points and 16 rebounds. Bockert scored half of those points in a dominant first half that saw her posted all but five of the hosts’ points over the first 16 minutes.
