Monarchs working their way out of the gutter
After opening the season with a loss the Mark Morris bowling team suffered two more 2A GSHL defeats last week at the hands of Ridgefield and Fort Vancouver, and then took another league loss on the chin Monday at Hudson’s Bay.
The Monarchs fell to the Eagles by a score of 2054-1846 on the road to open the new week. Lilly Lovingfoss led the visitors with a series score of 373, which included a tally of 203 in the opening game.
MJ Westmorland led the hosts with a series score of 400. Sanaa Tylor backed that effort up with a total tally of 389 for Hudson’s Bay.
Roni Little did her best to help the Monarchs snap their losing skid with a series score of 348, and Alex Perkins added 324 pins in the loss.
On Friday the Monarchs lost to Fort Vancouver by a score of 1724-1605 at Triangle Lanes. Mark Morris won the first round (699-649) but couldn’t keep up the pace over the course of Round II and both baker games.
Perkins led the Monarchs with a combined score of 329. Little added a tally of 285 for MM, while Lovingfoss finished on 266.
The Trappers were led by Caitlyn Lack and her combined score of 361.
The Monarchs also lost their midweek match on the road against Ridgefield. However, Mark Morris managed to keep things much closer before falling by a score of 1483-1468.
Perkins led the Monarchs with 353 pins down on the day. Lovingfoss added 283 points to the team total, while Karis Castellaw posted a score of 153 in the Game 2 to finish on 264.
Grace Bushears led the Spudders with a total score of 263.
The Monarchs will be back in action at home next Tuesday against Columbia River at 3:15 p.m.
R.A. Long bakes a win over River
The Lumberjills bowling team picked up another win in a 2A Greater St. Helens League match against Columbia River last Wednesday, but had to dig deep to pull out the win by a score of 1825-1754 at Triangle Lanes.
“I talked about slow starts in our match (against) Mark Morris and that carried over to today as well,” R.A. Long coach Shane Berridge said. “Despite the fact that the girls didn't feel super great about the way they bowled, it’s always nice to feel like you're struggling a bit and still pick up victories.”
R.A. Long won the opening round 748-619, but fell in the rematch by a score of 825-765. The teams then split the baker games, but the Jills did enough to hold off the Rapids’ advances.
Jade Walters led R.A. Long with a combined score of 341.
“A lot of composure in the baker games to do enough to put away a victory,” Berridge noted.
Bailee Smith turned in a total score of 327 for the Jills, while Abbie Wolters finished on 314 to help pull out the win.
“Despite not being the high score, Bailee Smith threw the ball really well today, especially in the second game and covered some clutch spares in bakers,” Berridge said.
Columbia River was led by Brooklyn Burnett’s total score of 330.
Kace Prindel also contributed to the win with a score of 122 in the second game. Those points represented her first varsity action for the Jills after being subbed in midstream.
“She continues to improve and will see more and more frames as she continues to get better,” Berridge said of Prindel.
R.A. Long will have the beginning of the week off before heading to Morton for the Bearcat Classic on Saturday.
Long carries Kelso to win over Camas
Arianna Long rolled a team-high 338 to lead Kelso over Camas at Big Al’s Bowling Alley last Wednesday in 3A Greater St. Helens League play.
“The team showed some resilience today and earned themselves a hard-fought win,” Kelso coach Justin Fugleberg said. “We struggled during the second game and the 91 pin lead we had after the first game had dwindled to just three pins going into our baker games.”
Long tallied 191 of her points in the first contest of the day. Layla Davenport backed up her teammate with a total of 282 in the match, while Addison Gallagher finished on 274.
Niko Blank led Camas, and the rest of the field, with a 343 series.
But the Lassies had just enough left in the tank to ride out the victory down the stretch.
“Our captains, Arianna Long and Paige Molyneux rallied their team to win both baker games and secure the win,” Fugleberg noted.
Kelso (2-0) will host Skyview on Tuesday at Triangle Bowl.
