Battle of Bear River — Naselle and Ilwaco get territorial in South Pacific Co. shootout
Bittner’s 27 can’t float Fishermen over Naselle
Naselle needed 22 points in the fourth quarter to overcome a huge night from Sophia Bittner for a 65-59 non-league victory at home over Ilwaco in a non-league girls basketball affair otherwise known as the Battle of Bear River.
Bittner dropped in a game-high 27 points to lead the Fishermen and helped the visitors jump out to an early seven point lead before Naselle quickly turned the tide.
But the Comets held the game’s first advantage with a two-point lead in the first quarter and a 31-25 tally in their favor at the break.
Aubrey Katyryniuk led Naselle with 19 points, five steals and three rebounds even as she battled foul trouble from the second period on.
“Tonight was a big win for the girls. Ilwaco is a good team,” Naselle coach Marie Green said. “The girls maintained their composure and got themselves back into the game… The atmosphere in the gym was so great and just helped to feed the girls’ energy.”
