WINLOCK – The Cardinals picked up their first win in their first try this fall, defeating Toutle Lake 2-1 in Central 2B League girls soccer action, Wednesday, on their home pitch at The Nest.
After a delay to the start of its season due to low turnout, Winlock was limited to just four shots on goal. But Victoria Sancho was able to break free and score a pair of goals in the first half to give the hosts their lasting advantage.
“Winlock had two runs that they were able to finish on,” Toutle Lake coach Alli Ostreim said.
Meanwhile, the Fighting Ducks were peppering the Winlock goal all game long with 36 shots on goal. However, the visitors were not rewarded for their shotgun approach to offense due to the extraordinary effort of Cara Steik between the pipes for the Cardinals.
Olivia Thomas scored Toutle Lake’s only goal in the 37th minute.
“We had the ball the entire second half, just couldn’t find the net,” Ostreim noted.
Toutle Lake (1-4) will play Hoquiam at Olympic Stadium on Monday at 6 p.m.
Winlock (1-0) will host Kalama on Monday at 6 p.m.
