In the Budget — Comets make the most of annual trek to Yakima

The Comets opened their run in the 1B State Volleyball Tournament with all of the precision and success they’d imagined on the four and a half hour bus ride they made from Naselle to Yakima midweek.
The girls from South Pacific County came barreling out of the gate against the No. 18 seed with a 12-point victory to open the match. But it was only the first set that went that way in what turned out to be a four-set season ending loss to Garfield-Palouse at the SunDome by scores of 13-25, 25-23, 25-22 and 25-14.
The Comets were certainly prepared for the task at hand when they showed up for another run in the state tournament.
“We watched quite a few of their games on NFHS. We found some holes and we practiced accordingly and I think that’s why that first set was so successful,” Naselle coach Bekah Wirkkala said. “For whatever reason we got away from what we were doing and weren’t as consistent as we had been.”
