Clastkanie’s Baker wins Phil White Classic title
The Tigers filled the gym Saturday for the Phil White Classic and saw one of their own climb to the top of the podium after winning their bracket in the annual high school wrestling tournament.
Natalie Baker made a straight run through the 125-pound gauntlet to put Clatskanie on the board with a championship of their own.
“Natalie Baker placed first, and is still undefeated wrestling in the girls brackets,” Clatskanie coach Zach Davis noted.
Stormy Turk (140), Jasper Watson (113), and Brett James (120) all settled for second place finishes for the Tigers, and the hosts placed fourth as a team.
David Nowling (132), Ben Blackwood (144), Jaxson Watson (150) and Ethan Rigsby (175) all managed bronze finishes for Clatskanie.
“It was a great tournament,” Davis noted. “A little smaller this year than it was last year because we are competing against a huge tournament in Washington that was going on at the same time.”
Phil White was the Clatskanie High School wrestling coach prior to Davis’ tenure. White died several years ago after many years working with wrestlers of all ages in Clatskanie.
