Those Days In History
April 12, 1975: Castle Rock’s track and field team, at the time one of the powerhouses in the state, gets a different sort of challenge — and a vacation — when coach Gary Swanson takes 23 of his athletes to Ripon, Calif., a long-distance dual meet. Their foes, Ripon High School, are coached by Don Holsey, a Wahkiakum alum and the brother of one of Swanson’s assistants. The Rockets take the dual meet 93-33, with Scott Spencer tying the school record with an even 10.0 in the 100-meter dash. The official dual didn’t include the javelin — which wasn’t a part of California meets at the time — but in an exhibition, Rob Rupley set a new Castle Rock record at 173 feet. As part of the trip, the team also toured a winery and went sightseeing in San Francisco. The whole expedition cost $2,300.
April 13, 2010: Kalama’s Nick LaRoy throws a 20-strikeout perfect game — his sixth career no-hitter — in front of multiple MLB scouts as the Chinooks down White Salmon 3-0. In the first game of the day, sophomore Lars Rider threw a six-inning no-hitter in a 13-0 win. It would be the last high school outing for LaRoy, a WSU commit, who ended up needing to undergo Tommy John surgery.
This Day In History
April 14, 1999: Kalama’s Kelli Arnold comes one walk shy of a perfect game, settling for a 13-strikeout no-hitter in a 10-win over White Salmon in Southwest Washington 1A League softball action. She helped her own cause with a 3-RBI triple, while Shanda Phillips knocked in two runs and Kristi Bryant drove in another.
